Education tech consulting.
I have been advising students and families about college since 2011 but I had an entire career prior to that. After graduating college with a degree in creative writing, I worked at a large publishing company, managing the timelines for multiple monthly magazine titles as well as copy editing and even writing a few pieces for publication. I then transitioned into digital marketing just as that was becoming relevant (we’re talking before social media even existed) and I worked on some large scale projects that we launched online. Some of the titles I worked with include Motor Trend, Import Tuner, European Car, VWTrends, and Super Street.
After a few years of that, I pursued more work with marketing, launching and managing multiple interactive web sites (when this was a new and fancy thing, mind you), TV commercials, interactive games, and traditional print media. I worked with web developers and artists on new technologies and pushing the envelope around design and technology and how they interact. I eventually became the Account Director at an agency and managed the entire production timeline and all account managers in the organization.
Once I moved into college advising (long story, but mostly I wanted to help students find their passions and fell in love with the work when I did it for my alma mater), I worked hard to support students but I also dug into the technology at Collegewise, my previous employer, and created their entire technology backbone, including setting up their first CRM, helping to launch and train our counselors on CollegePlannerPro (a college advising software platform), spearheading the integration of Slack, and creating our entire IT team, which I also managed. While I was running the IT department for a company of almost 100 employees (and advising students, of course), I did extensive research into other existing college advising software platforms and became familiar with many of the options out there. Eventually, the company decided to build their own college advising platform, effectively replacing CollegePlannerPro. I helped to create the original structure and framework when the company was getting bids for developers.
Because I decided to launch my own advising business, BB College Prep, I am now doing my own thing with college advising software and I have met with many others in the field who are developing their own systems. I am uniquely suited to this type of advising on consulting and have a great perspective into this combination of software and education.
